The old jerseys people loved were never cut the same way. A rink jersey was built to go over pads, a court tank to move freely, a ballpark button-front to hang straight. Our throwback designs keep those shapes, so the right size depends on the style as much as on you. This guide shows you how to measure a shirt you already own, explains how each Jersa cut fits, and helps you choose when you are between sizes.
The best way to choose: measure a shirt you like
Your body measurements tell you only part of the story. A shirt that already fits you the way you like tells you the rest: how roomy you prefer things, how long you like the hem. Pick one that is close to the style you are buying. For a hockey or football jersey, a sweatshirt or loose tee is a good match. For a basketball tank, a tank or a fitted tee. For a baseball button-front, a casual button shirt.
What you need
- A soft tape measure, or a piece of string and a ruler.
- A flat surface, like a table or a smooth floor.
- The shirt, buttoned or zipped if it has a front closure, and smoothed flat without stretching.
Chest width
Lay the shirt flat, front facing up. Measure straight across from one side seam to the other, about one inch below the armpits. This is the half-chest width; it is what most product measurements describe. Double it if you want the full chest around.
Body length
Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, where the collar meets the shoulder seam, straight down to the bottom of the hem. Do not follow the curve of a shaped hem; go straight down.
Shoulder width
Measure from one shoulder seam to the other across the back. This matters most for football jerseys, which are cut wide across the shoulders.
Sleeve length
For short sleeves, measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve. For long sleeves (hockey jerseys, the pond hockey crew, the cold-weather football jersey, the warm-up tee and the hoodie), measure from the shoulder seam to the cuff with the sleeve lying flat.
Compare
Write your numbers down and email them to us with the product name and the sizes you are considering. We will reply with that product’s measurements so you can compare like with like. It takes a minute and saves most exchanges.
Measuring yourself instead
If you do not have a similar shirt to hand, you can measure your body. Stand relaxed, wear a thin tee, and ask someone to help if you can.
- Chest: wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, keeping it level across your back. Do not pull it tight.
- Waist: measure around your natural waist, usually just above the belly button.
- Height: useful for judging length, especially on long-sleeve jerseys and the hoodie.
Body measurements and garment measurements are not the same number. A garment is always larger than the body it fits, and how much larger depends on the cut. That is why the fit notes below matter.
Fit notes for every Jersa cut
These notes describe how each style is meant to sit. They are not numbers; they are what to expect when you put it on.
| Style | Intended fit | Size advice |
|---|---|---|
| Hockey jerseys (lace-up, sunset yoke, hem stripe) | Loose and roomy, made to go over a layer | Usual size for a relaxed layered look; size down for a closer fit on its own |
| Goalie Cut (hem stripe V-neck) | Wider than the standard hockey cut | For extra room over pads or thick layers |
| Pond hockey long sleeve crew | Our slimmest jersey cut | Consider sizing up if you are between sizes or plan to layer |
| Basketball tanks and jerseys | Close to a regular tee fit | Usual tee size; size up to wear over a tee |
| Football jerseys | Wide across the shoulders, boxy body | Usual size for most; check shoulder width if you are slim-framed |
| Baseball button-front jerseys | Straight cut, hangs from the shoulders | Usual shirt size |
| Baseball pullover | Closer than the button-front | Size up if you like room or plan to layer |
| Ringer tee and warm-up long sleeve tee | Relaxed | Usual tee size |
| Jersey stripe pullover hoodie | Relaxed | Usual hoodie size |
| Six-panel cap | One Size, adjustable back | Adjust the strap to fit |
| Triple stripe crew socks | One size | Fits most adults |
Hockey jerseys
The Custom Name & Number Lace-Up Hockey Jersey, the Seventies Sunset Yoke and the Retro Hem Stripe V-Neck are cut the way rink jerseys always were: generous through the body and sleeves, with room to wear a hoodie or base layer underneath. If you are buying one to wear over a sweatshirt at an outdoor game, your usual size is the safe pick. If you want it to look tidy over just a tee for a night out, many people go one size down. Browse them all in Throwback Hockey Jerseys.
The Goalie Cut
The Retro Hem Stripe V-Neck Hockey Jersey has an extra size option called Goalie Cut, which costs $30 more. It is wider than the standard cut. Goalies wear jerseys over chest protectors, which is where the name comes from, but you do not need to be in net to want one. Choose it if you like a very roomy, draped look or need space over bulky layers. Not sure whether you need it? Email us your chest measurement and the size you normally wear and we will help you decide.
Pond hockey long sleeve crew
The Pond Hockey Long Sleeve Crew Jersey is the slimmest of our jersey cuts. Think of a fitted long sleeve top rather than a game jersey. It is a good choice if regular hockey jerseys swamp you. If you are between two sizes, or want to wear a thermal underneath on the ice, take the larger one.
Basketball tanks and jerseys
The Custom Name & Number Retro Basketball Tank, the Playground Classic, the Eighties Side Panel and the Nineties Gradient Fade sit close to a regular tee fit. Wear your usual tee size if you want it to look the way a court tank should. If you plan to wear it over a tee, the classic layered look, go up one size so the arm openings and body do not pull. See Retro Basketball Jerseys.
Football jerseys
Football styles are cut wide across the shoulders with a boxy body, the way old jerseys were built to go over pads. The Custom Name & Number Retro Football Jersey, the Sleeve Stripe Throwback, the Cold Weather Long Sleeve and the Mesh-Look Practice Jersey all follow this shape. Most people take their usual size. If you have narrow shoulders and dislike a boxy look, compare the shoulder width of a shirt you own before ordering. For a tailgate over a hoodie, measure the hoodie. Browse Retro Football Jerseys.
Baseball button-front jerseys
The Custom Name & Number Button-Front Baseball Jersey and the Pinstripe Throwback hang straight from the shoulders, like a casual button shirt. Your usual shirt size works for most people. Wear it buttoned over a tee or open over a tank on a summer evening at the ballpark. See Vintage Baseball Jerseys.
Baseball pullover
The Pullover Chest Stripe Baseball Jersey has no front buttons, so it sits closer than the button-front styles. If you like room through the chest or want to layer, size up.
Tees and hoodie
The Retro Number Ringer Tee, the Throwback Warm-Up Long Sleeve Tee and the Jersey Stripe Pullover Hoodie have a relaxed fit. Choose the size you normally buy in tees and hoodies. Find them in Retro Tees & Hoodies.
Cap and socks
The Decade Colourway Six-Panel Cap is One Size with an adjustable back, so you set the fit yourself. The Retro Triple Stripe Crew Socks are one size that fits most adults.
Between two sizes?
Ask yourself three questions:
- Will you wear something under it? Hoodie, thermal or tee underneath: go with the larger size, unless the style is already a loose cut like hockey.
- What look do you want? Throwback jerseys look natural slightly roomy. If you want a sharp, fitted look, the smaller size.
- Is it a gift? When you do not know exact measurements, the larger size is the safer bet for jerseys. The recipient can exchange it within 60 days.
Sizing for custom name and number jerseys
The name and number print the same way on every size: what you type is exactly what we print. Personalisation is included in the price for every size. We do not send proofs, so use the live preview to check the text.
Because personalised jerseys are printed to order, getting the size right the first time saves you waiting for a second print. If you are unsure, email us before you order and we will send the measurements for the size you are considering. Personalised items still follow our 60-day return policy; if a custom jersey does not fit, email us and we will help you with the best option for your order.
Ordering for a team or family
For a group order, collect each person’s usual tee or shirt size and how they plan to wear the jersey. Remind everyone which cut they are getting: someone who wears an L in a tee may want an L in a basketball tank but find an L hockey jersey roomy. A short list with name, number, size and style for each person keeps everything straight when you add jerseys to the cart one by one.
If the size is not right
You have 60 days to return or exchange. For change-of-mind returns, including the wrong size, we email you a free return label. Tell us the size you want instead and we will take it from there. Read the Returns & Exchanges Policy for the full process and the Refund Policy if you would rather have your money back. Refunds are issued within 7 days of receiving your return, and store credit never expires.
When you ask for an exchange, mention what felt wrong: too tight across the shoulders, too long in the body, too roomy overall. It helps us suggest the right size, and helps us improve these notes for everyone.
Care and size
Follow the care label inside each garment. Washing in cold water and air drying is a sensible habit for any printed garment, and turning jerseys inside out protects the printed name and number.
